WETHERAL BOWLING CLUB - NEWSLETTERS TO MEMBERS

NEWSLETTER 20

Outdoor Season Closure/ Indoor Season Start

The outdoor season closes on Friday the 20th of September. The Greenkeeper, Rob Tapper, and his Assistant, Barry Graham, need to start their autumn maintenance programme from then. Roll-ups for the next two weeks on Tuesday and Friday evenings will commence at 5.30pm. The last official club roll-up will take place on Friday the 13th of September. The Green will still be open the following week and depending on the weather outdoor play will still be possible.

The Short Mat season commences on Tuesday the 1st of October. There will be 3 sessions per week -  Tuesdays 1.30 – 3.30, Wednesdays 7.00 – 9.00, Fridays 7.00 – 9.00. Playing fees will be £2 per session with tea/coffee & biscuits provided. The annual subscription of £10 to be paid before the 14th October. Membership will be limited to 40 members. Members will be responsible for lifting and laying mats whenever necessary, eg for coffee mornings and socials. It is hoped to arrange a number of friendly matches against other short mat clubs and this will be the second year the club will participate in the North Cumbria Short Mat Bowls League.

Presentation Night

Presentation Night is on Friday the 18th of October at the Auctioneer. Please arrive at about 7pm, dinner will be served at  7.30. The programme and list of prize winners will be sent separately from this newsletter. Discussions have not yet taken place with the Auctioneer to establish what they will charge us per head. There is also the disco to pay for which will add further to the cost. Last year we charged £25 per head, in all probability it may be more this year. You will be notified as soon as possible and the tickets should be paid for at the next Coffee Morning on Saturday the 5th of October please. Also I would be grateful for everyone to bring a raffle prize to the event.

The Auctioneer will need to know how many of each MAIN COURSE are required. It is important therefore that on the list in the Bower you indicate which is your preference. Please indicate either beef (B), salmon (S), or the vegetarian alternative (VG). I will need to know your choice no later than THURSDAY THE 10TH OF OCTOBER.

Winter Social Activities

This winter's social events are being organised, in accordance with the club rules, by a small committee comprising Ruth Hewetson, Irene Scott, Helen Sewell, & John Proctor.

The programme of social events for the coming winter months is currently being planned and will begin with  Presentation Night at the Auctioneer on Friday the 18th of October, as mentioned above.

Club Tour 2025

You may recall in Newsletter 15 sent in February that the Tour Organising Committee, comprising myself, Ruth Hewetson and John Proctor had decided to relinquish their positions on the committee. However Ruth and John Proctor have had a change of mind and are currently looking at possible venues and suitable accommodation. Match Secretary Mike Scott will be arranging the matches to be played once the accommodation is chosen. Hopefully a tour will go ahead next May and once everything is organised an itinerary will be put together and circulated.

Coffee Mornings – Joker & Monthly Draw

Some of those who participate may not be aware that the annual subscriptions of £12 for the Joker and also £12 for the Monthly Draw are now due. The Joker subscription should be paid to John Proctor and the Monthly Draw subscription to John Sibley, preferably at the October Coffee Morning on Saturday the 5th of October. In the Monthly Draw there are 18 numbers still available for anyone who would like to join in.

Club Uniforms

Lesley Hewson is responsible for ordering club polo shirts, jackets and gilets and would like to know if any members would like to place an order in readiness for the outdoor season next year. If so, enter your name with your order on the list to be put up shortly on the club notice board in the Bower where there are pictures of the shirts etc, and a measurement chart. Alternatively contact Lesley direct on 01228/561210 or 07548665450 or by email on lhewson50@gmail.com. Don't delay as Lesley wishes to put in an order early in February.

New Members Guide

We have introduced a New Members Guide booklet and at a recent meeting for all the new members who joined the club since March 2023.  New members(post 2023) who were unable to attend the new members meeting may request a copy from the club secretary.

Telephone Numbers & Email Addresses

Recently I noticed several members had changed their telephone numbers on the list of members posted on the notice boards. It is important that I am notified of any changes to telephone numbers and also email addresses in order that I and yourselves can communicate properly with each member of the club.

Thank you. Time to take a rest!!
